Essure is a type of medical device that is used as a permanent surgical sterilization procedure. The device was developed by Bayer AG. Specifically, it is a small coil that is inserted into the fallopian tubes to block fertilization.

Unfortunately, thousands of women have developed serious problems associated with the devices, and litigation has resulted. The problems range from excruciating, intolerable chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, migration of the device or a device component, puncture or tear of the uterus or colon, severe migraines and allergic reactions, as well as corrective surgical procedures such as hysterectomy, and even death.
