Why You Should Consider Additional Auto Insurance in South Carolina

If you drive a vehicle, then you have to obtain auto insurance in South Carolina. Have you ever started your provider search only to be left with more questions than answers? Auto insurance can be confusing and complex. Know the difference in types of car insurance options available to you and which you should consider adding to the required coverage.

Full Coverage Car Insurance in South Carolina

Many folks think that if they have “full coverage” insurance they are, in fact, fully covered. Unfortunately, that belief is only partially correct. It’s correct only in so far as required by South Carolina statutes. There are optional coverages available that are not mandated but are highly recommended by our team of personal injury and liability attorneys. Let’s discuss them.

Uninsured

The Difference Between Underinsured & Uninsured Motorist Coverage

One of the best optional coverages is Underinsured Motorist Coverage (often abbreviated as UIM). This is not the same as Uninsured Motorist Coverage (often abbreviated as UM), which is required by law. UIM is optional and protects you and your family if an at-fault driver causes a collision and does not have enough insurance coverage to compensate you and your family adequately for injuries sustained.

Unfortunately, a vast majority of motorists in South Carolina carry the lowest amount of coverage legally permissible, which is $25,000. Everybody knows that an ambulance ride combined with trauma unit treatment and a few hours in the hospital can easily cost more than $25,000.

For example, Barrow Law Firm recently handled a case in which our client was in the hospital for five hours; that bill alone was almost $50,000. By the time medical treatment was completed the bills totaled almost $200,000. UIM insurance coverage kicks in when the amount of insurance the at-fault driver has to offer is insufficient, as in the case just described. Therefore, our firm recommends that all drivers obtain UIM coverage immediately so that you and your family will be adequately protected in the event the worst happens.
